Report Description
NESDIS MARINE POLLUTION SURVEILLANCE REPORT - GULF OF MEXICO AN AREA OF POSSIBLE OIL IS SEEN IN THIS IMAGE STRETCHING SOUTHWEST FROM THE SITE OF THE DESTROYED TAYLOR PLATFORM. THE SLICK STRETCHES FOR APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES IN LENGTH WITH A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF 0.1 MILE. MUCH OF THE SLICK IS LESS THAN 0.1 MILE WIDE THOUGH. THE AREA OF POSSIBLE OIL BECOMES FRAGMENTED INTO A FEW SEPARATE PIECES NEAR THE SOUTHWESTERN END. A PREVIOUS ANALYSIS, ALSO FROM 1/18, USED SAR IMAGERY TO DEPICT A SIMILAR SLICK AT THIS LOCATION. MORE OF AN EASTERLY COMPONENT TO THE NORTHEASTERLY SURFACE WINDS HAD SET UP BETWEEN THE PRIOR ANALYSIS AND THIS ONE CAUSING A SLIGHT WESTWARD SHIFT TO THE SUSPECTED OIL SLICK.
